Historical Sociology of Law and Legal History

In the seminar we will discuss the potential of the historical sociology of law for legal historians, based on a text by the sociologist Marta Bucholc, which provides an overview of the historical sociology of law with a focus on sociological studies of official law. It unfolds the main themes of historical sociology of law, ordered by research traditions, and shows the plurality of paths along which historical sociological studies of law have developed. The text allows us to reflect on the role of theory and theoretical paradigms in the sociology of law, in particular Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and Niklas Luhmann.
