Presentation and debate on the lemma Maleficium (Dictionary of the School of Salamanca’s Juridical-Political Language)
While Francisco de Vitoria’s relectiones De Indis and De iure belli have been the object of continuous – and sometimes repetitive – academic research since the end of 19th century, the same cannot be said for his ideas on witchcraft. Vitoria developed these ideas in his Commentaries to Thomas Aquinas’ IIa-IIae, in his relectio De magia and in a later relectio, which has since been lost.
Contextualising Vitoria’s texts within the early modern debates on witchcraft (to which important jurists such as Bodin and Pierre de Lancre contributed) as well as taking into account the reflections on magic and demonology written by Vitoria’s later disciples and collaborators, Elena Danieli (MA in Philosophy, University of Bologna) will present a first draft of the lemma Maleficium, which is part of the lemmata currently in preparation for the upcoming Dictionary of the School of Salamanca’s Juridical-Political Language.
The colloquium will be held in English.
The colloquium will take place as a video conference. For more information, please send an email: salamanca@rg.mpg.de.
